Acupressure Points for Constipation
Constipation is the cause of general discomfort, as it hinders the functioning of the digestive tract. Besides following physician’s advice of consuming fiber-rich food and maintaining an exercise routine, acupressure can help in alleviating the symptoms of constipation.
It is believed that each meridian is linked with certain organs in the body. When one applies manual pressure to these specific points, it promotes the flow of energy, thereby allowing the body to heal.
You can find this point on the back of your palm next to the base of your thumb. You can locate this point by bringing your thumb and index finger close together. The mound of flesh that protrudes is the ‘joining the valley’ point.
How to massage it?
Begin with gently massaging on the point in a circular motion. Slowly start building up some pressure. You can also try tapping it with a knuckle. As you go on applying pressure, see to it that it doesn’t unbearably hurt. Of course, some sort of discomfort will be present, but do not pressure the point to the degree of intense pain. Continue massaging for a minute or two, and remember never to exceed five minutes. You can switch over to the other hand after you’re done with one.
Ideally, massage the points on each hand for a minute. Repeat this 3 – 4 times a day.
The Sea of Energy point is located three finger-widths below the navel. Considered to be the central point of the body, this point aids in bringing a sense of balance to the individual.
The Heaven’s Pivot points are located three finger widths on the left and right side of the navel.
How to massage it?
To begin with, you need to relax and take in a few deep breaths. Then, use your index, middle, and ring finger to lightly apply pressure on the Sea of Energy point, but only till it feels a little tight. Keep the pressure from light to moderate for about thirty seconds, and then release. You may also massage with light, circular motions. Repeat it another two times. Use the same technique to apply pressure on the Heaven’s Pivot points as well.
It has been observed that stimulating these points may lead to a bowel movement within a few minutes. However, remember that you must immediately halt the massage if you happen to experience any pain.
Pregnant women are strictly advised against using this technique to relieve constipation, as it may trigger premature labor.
Use your thumb to apply pressure on this point using circular motions, gradually building up pressure. You can also make use of your index finger to do the same. Even gently tapping the point will help. Massage this point on both hands.
Stimulate this point for 30 – 40 seconds on each hand. Repeat this 3 – 4 times a day.
Regular stimulation of these points is known to help in alleviating constipation in the long run. However, ensure that you exercise caution while practicing acupressure, and consult a certified practitioner if you happen to be unsure about the technique.
